May Everett is a painter and printmaker based in the UK. She currently works in a studio in central Lewes, and runs printmaking courses across Sussex.

Everett studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton and discovered printmaking techniques in her final year, fuelling an interest to unify her practice as both a painter and a printmaker. Her work was selected for the Jackson’s Art Prize longlist 2024 and has featured in many exhibitions, art fairs and open studio events, notably ‘It Rose & IT Fell’ curated by Terrace Gallery in East London, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, and Glyndebourne Opera House in Autumn 2024.

Artist Statement

“I am interested in lyrical abstraction and combining intuitive and painterly mark making with more considered collaged elements. My process often begins with ink drawings on monotype plates or semi-translucent paper: these directly observed, and partly imagined, marks are transferred, blotted, torn or rearranged, leaving residual impressions on the surface that are then developed with oil paint and printing inks. My work is very much process led therefore I tend to discover the image whilst working, although recurring themes often emerge. Sussex landscapes, gardens, foliage, textiles, window frames, archways, vessels, and bodily forms shift, dissolve through abstraction. Subtle layers distort colour and mass as I explore the space or perhaps frictions between the visible and the invisible, resulting in outcomes with recognisable elements but also a sense of ambiguity. I also construct books and use simple binding methods to group together collections of drawings, ideas, notes, collages, discarded prints and offcuts. These become libraries and also objects in themselves and have become an integral part of my process.”
